Nokia 810 helps new President-elect Obama shine in style

“Don’t call it a comeback I been here for years” as LL once said, that’s the way I kinda feel about the Nokia 810 internet tablet. Tablets in various shapes and form factors have been around for some time but now that’s all changed. The Nokia 810 tablet is sleeker, faster, better equipped and most of all comes WiMax ready! Yes, that means blazing-ly fast speeds in your pocket. So on election night I pulled out the N810 and used it to manage my need to send twitter election updates and to watch streaming CNN video - YES you heard me right. AND what makes the N810 experience so pleasurable is the 800×400 screen resolution that fits in your pocket, which is much better than the typical 320×240 and 480×320 resolution on most handheld devices-this means no more endless scrolling when viewing webpages.

I posted this comparison photo of the N810 tablet and the MacBookPro both displaying the www.BarackObama.com website so you can see the details.

My downside of the N810 is that it’s not a phone. I wish is was, I want it to be! Now don’t get me wrong it has WiFi and WiMax built-in so you can feel free to Skype away but I want more than that especially at around $500. People that defend the device don’t consider this device a smartphone. I agree with that, it’s in its own class; it’s a web access tool, VoIP phone, mp3 player, video player, video chat machine etc…you name it. It just not a phone.

The name is called XOHM and many of you may still not know who that is BUT you should. XOHM is supplying the U.S. with WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) a wireless data system and Baltimore city (my hometown) became the 1st city in the US to launch this service. Check out the video interview with Sprint CEO Dan Hesse as he talks about WiMax and betting the Sprint farm on it.

I picked up one of the express cards the 1st day it was available and have been running tests the past couple of weeks. My BOTTOM LINE? Blazing fast man! I was getting speeds on the download like 4-5Mbit/sec and in the same spot on my EVDO broadband card I was getting like 1.5Mbit/sec. No lie in some spots I got download speeds of 7 Mbit/sec. Now, I recognize alot of people may not be on the service just yet and that it’s prob not realistic to get 7Mbit/sec continually, XOHM is advertising speeds between 3-5Mbit/sec. I was able to pull up The Office episode on HULU, play a youtube video and broadcast on Ustream at the same time without a glitch. Ohhh and I took it in the car too for a drive to see if the connection would hop from tower to tower that was pretty seamless too.

For the techie in you the difference between WiFi and WiMax is that WiMax broadcasts on the 2.5-GHz portion of the radio frequency spectrum, which is a higher frequency than the 2.4 GHz that WiFi (the 802.11b/g/n standards) runs on. It’s also different because it has a longer range, one WiMax enabled tower can reach 30 or so miles as opposed to several hundred feet from WiFi. To really compare this you should think of a home DSL or cable broadband connection while you’re mobile! That’s what this is like. I know this is a “Want it Wednesday” post but you can only get it right now in Baltimore. Why Baltimore? Because we are the geek capital? NOT! Sprint/XOHM engineers said they needed a test bed that wasn’t too large but dense and an urban environment that would have alot of frequency challenges with buildings etc…They are doing a national rollout of XOHM WiMax check their site to see when service is coming your way www.XOHM.com. Upcoming cities are: DC, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia and others. When it comes to your area it’s worth a look for sure, especially if you are in a city with 3 or fewer options right now for broadband.

“Yes I called you a ‘droid’.” If you’re from the real deal, the first images that should come to mind are C3PO or R2D2! But that’s all changed now! Thanks to Google, my Star Wars memories are getting competition from Google’s new mobile operating system called “Android”. How many of you even know the dictionary definition of an android? Well, according to Merriam-Webster it’s a mobile robot usually with a human form. Call it whatever you want just don’t say Mario didn’t tell ya! I’m telling ya for the 2nd time, remember the 1st alert was with the Apple iPhone 70% developer rev share well now Android is giving you the same opportunity except this time your application will get shine! You see unlike Apple, Android is taking all apps – at least that’s what they told me on the radio last night (listen to audio below).

Bottom line the Google Android marketplace doesn’t have many apps right now BUT that window of opportunity will be closing - hurry up, we just learned coming on Monday their app store opens up for ANY app. They too are giving 70% revenue share for your application so STOP playing around sharpen your JAVA programming skills and make some apps. Start with a very simple and quick app and use that as leverage to get you additional funding for more apps, oh yeah and don’t rule out advertising in your app or take it even further, make an edutainment-app and apply for some grant funding from places like NIH, NSF – whatever you do don’t miss out, currently T-mobile has the only android-powered phone the “G1″ but rest assured many more will be coming soon. Entrepreneurs find some black developers and invest in them.

For more scoop listen to today’s Digital Spin Google Android interview with Google Android Engineer Steve Harrowitz.

Ever wish there was a Wii-like game for DJ’ing? Well come next spring it will no longer be a wish, it will be reality at least on XBox360 and Playstation 3. Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is a video game to be relased in collaboration with Genius Products LLC, Genco Interactive, 7 Studios, and QD3 (hip-hop producer to the likes of Tupac and LL Cool J as well as Tech geek like you and I) that tests your DJ skills. So just how will this video game accomplish this? By using a realistic turntable controler called Scratch Deck created by Numark. If this concept sounds familiar it’s because it is. Think Guitar Hero for Wii. Scratch will allow you to mix to popular hip-hop tracks as well as orginal music from well known artists. While my playing Guitar Hero is a FAIL, you can certainly beleive that I can’t wait to try my hand (literally) at Scratch.

How many times have you been out and about and missed a special moment that should have been captured on video? Or are you a blogger that needs to capture video to compliment your posts? Either way you should take a look at the FLIPvideo. This little handy digital video camera is perfect for those “wish I had my video camera” moments. The Flip video camera runs on 2 AA batteries, this is absolutely one of my favorite features. No more looking around for outlets or running out of battery life just when I’m shooting the most important content. It’s easy to handle, incredibly simple to use and inexpensive starting at $129 for 60 mins of video capture. The Flip video has no tapes to change, convert of lose. The video is shot direct to its internal flash memory. And downloading to your computer is easy, it has a built-in usb connector that flips out of the side of the unit (no more worrying about losing cables) and connects right to your usb port. I’m very impressed with this device! Take it from someone in the traditional and new media biz this camera is awesome for video bloggers and web video in general. The microphone quality is incredible and the picture quality (while it is a low resolution 640×480) it shoots phenomenally well in low-light conditions. It’s about the size of a pack of cigarettes making it so easy to carry anywhere! It’s amazing how many life moments end up being great video moments. Beyond videobloggers this is great for families, students, journalists, teachers and general consumers. I’d love to see more teachers using this in the classroom and allowing students to create, edit and publish their own stories - great for a media class. There are several models and colors to choose from, the two gigabyte version gives ya 60 minutes of recording time.

My bottom line: I’m flipping out on the Flip. An absolute must-have in my book! I have had one minor problem with the unit but after performing a hard-reset it was all good. Oh and just hold it very still as you shoot, it’s easy to fall into “shakey-cam” because it is so small and easy to move around while shooting, it feels like an extension of your hand.

PROS: Lightweight, fits in pocket, no cables, runs on 2 AA batteries (YES! no complaining about a dead battery or the frustrated “I need a freakin outlet!”)

NEGS: 640 x 480 resolution (bye-bye HD), no flash (but somehow still does remarkably well in low-light environments), photos have to be extracted from the video

COST: Starts at $129 to $179 at www.theflip.com

Yeah, it’s back to school time and some of you are thick into classes right now. So I figured I’d introduce you to a new piece of tech that I have found to be both cool and useful. It’s called the Pulse “smartpen” by Livescribe. The Pulse smart pen is a pretty neat idea for those of you who take alot of notes. It’s not always practical to take notes on a laptop (which is my preference) and in many meetings today I use the free audio editing software Audacity to capture the audio of my meetings on my MAC. This is very helpful but not very practical. My MAC battery life runs (well you know) pretty damn weak and sometimes I’d rather write than type. The Pulse smartpen has solved that problem. The pen records audio as you write or draw and links the recorded audio to what you are writing at the precise time. Think of it like a TIVO for your note-taking, all the captured material is timeline based, so going back to any page in your notes and tapping the pen on a word will restart your audio at the precise moment your wrote that word. On average people write about 15 or so words a minute, so you could be missing alot by trying to catchup in meetings, courtrooms, classes etc…. Keeping up is one thing, understanding your notes is another. How many of you have a hard time reading your own notes? This device is perfect for you! Imagine flipping your notes back 2 months, tapping a sentence on the page and hearing the exact audio that was being said at that time. Brilliant idea, great for students, BUT also lawyers, doctors, patients who need to record doctor notes - the list could go on and on! For example it captures more than just audio, drawings can also be recorded and played back as a movie that shows the progress of your sketch or design. The Pulse Smartpen uses a camera thats under the pen and custom paper with microdots to capture every stroke and notation. The real magic, though, is that the pen simultaneously records every sound and connects the resulting audio to the captured image.

Oh and yes, you can sync the pen with your computer, the Livescribe software syncs your notes and the linked audio so you can actually search by keyword. When I reviewed my files on my PC (no MAC version yet) you can simply mouse-click on a word and the audio recorded at the time of that specific pen stroke will begin playing. Man, this gadget is perfect for students who’s handwriting can look like hieroglyphics especially when trying to keep up with SOME of those long-winded (yadda, yadda, yadda) professors.

I tested the $199 2Gig version that can capture up to 100 hours of audio. They do have a less-expensive 1Gig version for $149. Special paper notebooks cost $19 for a 4-pack of notebooks, they also are planning to let you print paper from their site for free to eliminate use barriers.

Mario’s bottom line?
Pros: works as advertised, the pen can be used as a regular ink pen (imagine that), relatively inexpensive, audio capture is incredible for its size
Negs: needs special paper, no optical character recognition for transcribing my notes to text (but I hear thats’s coming)
