Blogging Maven Gina McCauley reportedly acquired Black Weblog Awards in a release issued early this morning. The two had recently entered a partnership to host the Black Weblog Awards at it’s annual conference this summer in Los Angeles. The live event would be the first for the Black Weblog Awards which had previously operated in an online only environment.

McCauley’s GEMPIRE Interactive, which I’m unclear if this is a new entity created for the acquisition or something that already existed, is officially making the acquisition. Ms. McCauley is the company’s CEO and with the acquisition will now serve as the Executive Director of the Black Weblog Awards. Maurice Cherry, Founder of the Black Weblog Awards, will stay on as Chairman of the entity and continue to serve as the public face of the brand in addition to other duties. McCauley will handle day-to-day operations of the Black Weblog Awards, including making decisions on new rules and categories, as well as nominees and finalists. New technologies utilized for the Awards and other related executive duties are also under her jurisdiction.

“This acquisition marks GEMPIRE Interactive’s first tech startup buy, which is also great since our target demographics are so similar,” says Gina McCauley, founder of the Blogging While Brown Conference and CEO of GEMPIRE Interactive. “We can now add an additional layer of programming to our annual conference, as well as strengthen our position for outreach to the Black blogging community.”

Maurice Cherry, founder of the Black Weblog Awards and current chairman, says the buy was exactly was needed to catapult the Black Weblog Awards to the next level. “After spending five years creating and building this brand, I realized that a move like this was best in order to achieve our dream of putting Black bloggers on a bigger platform for the general blogosphere to see. We’re dominating Twitter, but blogging is where it all began.”

The first major addition from this acquisition is a live Black Weblog Awards ceremony, which will be held at the 4th Annual Blogging While Brown Conference in Los Angeles, CA on July 9, 2011.
