Shaq and Rick Fox Host the First Ever NBA Social Media Awards Tonight

As the NBA Finals set record high rating, the NBA is trying to take its digital following to the next level too with the first ever NBA Social Media Awards.

Shaquille O’Neal will host the event today, June 20 at 9 p.m. EST on NBATV where players will be recognized in addition to teams and fans who excelled at leveraging social media for engagement and entertainment this NBA season.

Fans can vote for a list of categories that include the social slam award and social MVT by visiting the official social media awards website and the NBA’s Facebook Page.

According to Mashable, more than 350 current and former NBA players are on Twitter. Counting official league, team and player profiles, the league claims more than 277 million combined Facebook likes and Twitter follows.

It’s clear the NBA has great social/digital marketing skills and their players know how to utilize their social media presence. As they lead pro league athletics in social media, it will be interesting to see what other leagues will step up to the social media plate.
