Rap Genius is a startup from the Bay Area, Calif. that has created a massive and growing community around music lyrics. On Rap Genius people can post song lyrics, and then discuss the meanings into minute detail. The site relies on the crowd to contribute the content.
Rap Genius is in fact, genius! For years there have been lyrics site on the web, but they are putting an innovative touch onto an idea that has kind of surfaced, but not to its full potential.
Believe it or not, there are many people that are interested in lyrics. According to The Next Web, two percent of all Google searches are people trying to figure out what the actual words to songs are. Especially the songs by the likes of artists such as Waka Flocka, for the simple fact you can’t understand half of what he is saying.
The company is looking to reach out to artist’s representatives for artists like Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Madonna and Tyler the Creator of the group Odd Future. Although the site is Rap Genius, it’s not just about rap lyrics. They want to represent all types of music.
Rap Genius is expecting to launch a mobile site in the near future. Already 17 percent of site traffic comes from mobile devices accessing the desktop version of their site.
