MetaLayer Working to Contextualize Information on the Mobile and Social Web

Black  technology entrepreneur, Jon Gosier alongside Matthew Griffiths have worked together in the tech space for years. Starting with Jon’s company Appfrica and then joining the Ushahidi team which recently won the Knights News Challenge for the SwiftRiver project. The two have joined forces yet again creating metaLayer, Inc. metaLayer is a company that aims to help users contextualize information consumed via the mobile and social web.

The big idea came while Gosier was walking through a village in rural Africa a few years back. Being unfamiliar with his surroundings he used his smartphone to get directions and information about where he was. This got him thinking how people’s lives would change if they had access to information about the environments they lived in.

It became metaLayer’s goal is to build applications that make this type of insight and relationship between things more accessible to people who do in fact have access to smartphones and other technologies.

Their first product is called metaLens, a visual search application for iOS. metaLens makes the real-world the input for your mobile device. There are a few other visual search applications on the market, but require the person to define what the subject is.

What distinguishes metaLens from other visual search apps is that it takes even more of the work out of the process. It solely requires you to just point your device at an object and then metaLens does the rest. Also, metaLens doesn’t include facial recognition.  They are primarily focused on non-living objects and text.

As a company, metaLayer is currently working to make their first product, metaLens the best product it can possibly be and will be launching the iOS app in a few weeks. They also have an API in the works which allows businesses to process their images as a service using their APIs, so that they can leverage contextual photos in their own applications.
