Obama to Discuss STEM Education Friday at Intel
President Obama’s West Coast tech tour will include a trip to Intel’s headquarters in Oregon to tour the company’s headquarters with its CEO Paul Otellini.
According to the Associated Press, the Intel tour will showcase the company’s efforts to spur innovation and prepare workers for jobs in high-tech industries, and Obama will speak about the role of education in preparing workers for those jobs.
Intel’s corporate social responsibility platform includes a big commitment to technology in education for students from kindergarten through college.
Last month, the winner of the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair Gordon Moore Award joined First Lady Michelle Obama in her box during the President’s State of the Union address.
Obama is heavily promoting technology, innovation and entrepreneurship as tools to increase jobs and improve the economy. Earlier this week the President issued his fiscal year 2012 budget proposal which includes $13 billion in additional funding for education and support for strengthening science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
The Intel visit comes a day after Obama’s private meetings tonight in the San Francisco area with CEOs Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Steve Jobs of Apple and Eric Schmidt of Google and Jeffrey Immelt of GE, who Obama recently named head of his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.
