Alliance for Digital Media Hosts North Carolina Digital Empowerment Summit
Reports show that minorities are making steady gains in closing the digital divide. However, there is still a lot of work to be done before every American has equal digital footing. Today the Alliance for Digital Equality is hosting the North Carolina Digital Empower Summit to discuss the problem in depth and provide solutions to getting broadband access to underserved American communities.
The summit, consisting of three panels “ will highlight the role of wireless and wireline broadband access and adoption in addressing some of the most critical issues facing under-served communities in our country today, such as access to quality and affordable education, jobs and healthcare in low-income communities.” The summit brings together some the leading voices in the fight to ensure that minorities are able to access the benefits of the Internet from public and private sectors.
Our own Angela Benton will be participating in a panel. Titled “The Wireless Broadband Revolution,” Benton will be sharing viewpoints with Dr. Bryan Setser, Executive Director, North Carolina Virtual Public School, Ronald E. Hampton, Executive Director, National Black Police Association, Alliance for Digital Equality, Washington, DC DEC Chair,Ellen Lail, Director, Office of Strategy and Operations, Cisco and Kevin Smith, Vice President of Business Development, Definition 6. The panel will be moderated by CNN Technology Contributor, Mario Armstrong. The panel will discuss the necessity for government policy to be created to ensure minorities have access to high speed broadband as well as the myriad of opportunities afforded by the Internet and emerging technology.
