GetGlue is Coming to Android
One of the most “critically acclaimed” social networks is coming to the Android platform very soon. Dubbed as a social network for entertainment, GetGlue has released the beta version of their Android app. We have covered the benefits of GetGlue before and the addition of the Android app completes the cycle as they will now have a strong web presence, iPhone app and an Android app. Focused on sharing user preferences (and consumption) on television shows, movies, books and music, the mobile app will allow users to check-in within one of these four topics and also see what your friends are “consuming” in real-time.
The GetGlue Android app is being released into beta about 45 days after the offical iPhone app launch which is impressive. The quicker GetGlue addresses needs for both major smartphone markets, the more chance for it to hit the mainstream. Take a look at some of the features expected in the Android app:
- Share your check-ins with your Twitter and Facebook friends.
- Win free stuff from major brands through check-ins and sticker awards.
- See what your friends are currently watching, listening to, or reading … in real time.
- Access existing reviews, ratings and clips from over 20 million movies, books and record albums.
This week GetGlue also announced exclusive stickers to be awarded when checking in to the movies “Eat, Pray, Love” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ” which are being released nationwide this weekend. Once you check in and get your virtual sticker, you can go on the GetGlue’s website and request a physical sticker to be mailed to you. A simple concept to build loyalty and spread the word.
I wonder if the upcoming movie ‘Takers’ or the next Tyler Perry release could employ a similar strategy. What about a LA Bank’s “Vampire Huntress” sticker and some free giveaways? Perhaps if you are listening to the latest release by B.O.B. you could qualify for free tickets to his concert in your city or his next album complimentary. There is definitely opportunities for African-American properties (I’m looking at you Essence, VIBE and Spike Lee among others) to join on the front in of a small but growing phenomenon such as GetGlue. Since mobile applications have been launched, the time is now.
GetGlue’s Android app is not launching without competition. Miso, the social network for talking about all-things TV has just launched an Android app as well. Specifically focused on just television, the Miso Android app also allows you to see what your friends are currently watching, see what TV shows are currently trending (nice way to find new, hot TV shows, offers voice search and will reward you with unique badges to add your profile. The options for watching TV with a social spin are increasing very quickly. Pick a service and get to sharing.
