Droid X: Bigger, Better, and Deffer Than EVO

Droid X: Bigger, Better, and Deffer Than EVO

Motorola is seven days away from unleashing a stud phone for the Android. This time the phone is called Droid X and it packs some significant features to meet all of your smartphone needs. Let’s take a look at what makes this phone a tempting option to the EVOIncredible and even the iPhone 4 (gasp!!).

  • Five (5) x 2.6 inches by 0.4 is the general size of the phone. The largest Android phone on the market.
  • 4.3 inch 854 by 480 screen
  • Three microphones. Two are for noise cancellation which makes call quality very high.
  • Large antenna which increases reception and severely limits dropped calls.
  • Bluetooth headset and voice triggered dialing via bluetooth which is a unique feature to most Android phones. Voice recognition continues to stay strong across the Android platform and this phone is no different.
  • The Droid X has the ability to act as a Wifi hotspot for up to five different devices. This isn’t free as costs begin at $20 extra per month and extra GB usage will increase the cost per month as well. There is also rumored to be USB tethering as well.
  • Eight (8) plus hours of talk time is a welcome change from the EVO (which is really EVO’s only issue). It seems safe to say battery life won’t be an issue for this phone and there is a thicker battery available with more hours available for purchase as well.
  • Phone will be released with Android 2.1 OS. Everyone is waiting for 2.2 to be released and word has it coming out between late summer and Christmas time. This would be the main concern for me as the new features are very attractive.
  • Eight (8) megapixel camera BUT no front facing camera.
  • Touchscreen keyboard only. The large screen should convert some late adopters.
  • Video recording is captured at 720p
  • 8GB of built-in memory and a 16 GB SD card is included.
  • FM radio with 15 preset channels.
  • This phone is exclusive to the Verizon network.
  • 1-GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor which is extremely fast and powerful for a phone.

These are a lot of features to absorb, but it doesn’t take long to see that this phone packs a punch and offers some great options for Android users.  The phone will be released on (July 15, 2010) and available for $299 (with the $100 mail in rebate) with Verizon. As I continue to weigh the pros and cons of Droid X and EVO,  I find myself putting my iPhone out to pasture.  Will you be lining up to get this phone? Let us know in the comments section.

I'm cool with my Evo.

big G says:

Verizon 4g ( LTE ) will only have 100 pop, and that is on high end. LTE will only be available in downtown area. Verizon ran out of money about a month ago . LTE is great but it will not help me at my home. Yes no unlimited data plan. EVO is still on top

My “New Every Two” upgrade option will be available next month. But my VZDub contract as a whole will up around XMas.

My first instance is to keep my janky BlackBerry Storm 9530 (the app memory is KILLING ME!) until my contract is up and switch to the iPhone (if it doesn't come to VZW). But if I hear a bunch of good things about the Droid X, I may re-up another 2 year contract with VZW just to get my hands on one!

Thanks for the commen6 Nikki6. Very good tip about purchasing now and saving money later.

Wade says:

Well for me it was the first time I have seen a feature where when you slip it into a dock that the UI changes to meet your needs. So for example when you slip it into the car dock the UI changes to these 6 large buttons that are specific to what you will need when driving so it is safer and easier to use. Same for the desktop dock. It changes to an alarm clock UI with launcher icons you can scroll through at the bottom. So for me that is what I am referring to as ingenious.

Maybe it exists somewhere else but this is the first time I have seen this type of implementation or as effective of a docking implementation. Thanks

Amani says:

Thanks for the comment Wade. What about the car and desktop dock make you feel that they are very ingenious?

Wade says:

Right, makes sense. I will crunch the numbers when I go into buy it on the 15th. The Verizon store here is holding one for me. They are also holding the car and desktop dock those things are sweet and very ingenious :) .

redgod8323 says:

curious where you got this info about lte not being unlinited?

Nikki6 says:

wade: even if you got a 2-year contract. you can still upgrade every year as long as you're the primary line. you get the perk of an early upgrade. you just don't get the extra discount. Get a 2-year contract now so you can get the best discount and then in a year you'll still be able to get another phone at the discounted 2-year prcing again.

Rowe513 says:

I should have mine on July 15th……can't wait!

Wade says:

Yes, I am all over this phone. Leaving iPhone for Droid X.

It makes sense to wait on Verizon 4g because LTE is much faster than Sprint's WiMAX and their coverage will be better. Also, Verizon is saying they won't have handsets for 4g out until about this time next year. The 4g release this year will mainly be for dongles for laptops.

Don't get me wrong the EVO is sweet and I almost bought it but for me the OMAP processor, bluetooth voice dialing, screen quality tests, better battery life, car dock and desktop dock is what sold me.

I am going with one year contract and paying a bit more for the phone so I can buy the Droid X 4G next year.

Jkellynewyork says:

LTE will not provide unlimited data – the Droid X may well be the last flagship Verizon Android phone available with the unlimited data package. For now, for me, I would rather have unlimited data that faster internet speeds.

Crgog1 says:

Why buy an Evo-like device without 4G capability when LTE should arrive by end of 2010. Sounds like Verizon is trying to slow some Evo sales.

Mdavenpo1 says:

yes, I cancelled my Iphone order as soon as I saw my first Droid X ad, even the pictures of the white one have not swayed me

Steb0ne1 says:

Nope, I'll be sticking to my Evo… Verizon's plans are just too expensive compared to Sprint, plus I actually like having a front camera and even like custom Roms even more

EvoFan says:

Bigger phone then EVO but same size screen, pointless
