Great News for Startups: comScore Offers FREE Analytics

Not surprisingly, a lot of amazing information has been presented at TechCrunch Disrupt this week in New York. Most exciting to web startups was comScore‘s announcement that its site tagging service would be free for all websites and its dashboard free to some startups.

Eric Bosco, chief product officer for comScore told Disrupt virtual and physical attendees that as a part of the company’s “Start-up, Step-up” initiative their dashboard would be free of charge for startups with less than a million unique visitors per month.  Dashboard access will be $799 per month for startups with 1-2 million uniques per month. The Media Metrix Suite, a media planning and online audience measurement tool will be available to both groups for 50% off.

Tagging enables any website to be tracked and is alone about a $5000 value.

Until this announcement comScore’s analytics would have been one of the best tools available for measuring site traffic but also one of the most expensive. Now it is more accessible and will most likely provide stiffer competition to sites like Quantcast and Compete, both of which have provided free services for a long time.

ComScore is going to battle with Quantcast. ComScore makes a pretty penny and dominates their market, as far as advertisers are concerned, but Quantcast has been trying to sneak in by attracting sites that can't afford ComScore. With Quantcast growing, ComScore has recognized the threat and is trying to steal or share some of Quantcast's mid-level subscribers.
