How To Connect With Your Co-Workers Using SocialWok
by rahsheenSocialWok is a collaboration tool for business. You can think of it as a business version of Facebook, allowing you to connect and share with your business partners, employees, and management. It’s fully integrated with Google Apps and even has a clean, Google-ish feel to it. The simple interface hides a wealth of power that should help your business or organization make things happen, and even collaborate and connect with other businesses.
The first step is to simply login with your existing email address. You can use your Gmail address, Google Apps email address, or a valid work email address. SocialWok will automatically connect to your various Google services so that you can get to work immediately. During the initial setup process, you’ll be able to invite anyone you plan to work with by specifying their email address.
Sharing / Discussion
The simplest operation you will need to perform in SocialWok is to share stuff. This is how you communicate with your team and store data for later. SocialWok goes as far as possible to make this as powerful as possible while keeping things simple. You can @mention someone in your post just as you might do on Twitter or Facebook to make sure they see it. From the share box, you can also:
- Upload a file
- Attach / Create Google documents
- Add links with thumbnails and excerpts pulled in automatically
- Add / Create a calendar event
- Include your location
Feeds / Social Media
Probably the most interesting feature in SocialWok are feeds. A feed is basically a specific stream of data that you can import into SocialWok and make available to a specific group. If you have a large organization, you could use feeds to separate your SocialWok into different departments. This will make sure individuals in the organization are not overwhelmed by information and can stay focused on what’s important.
The other use for feeds is to connect with the social media world. Get your team involved in your organization’s social media activities by pulling in your Twitter, Facebook, and Buzz (yep, they’ve already got Buzz) feeds. Post items to your social media accounts, and respond to those engaging you all from within SocialWok. Add a Twitter Search or Google Alerts feed so that you and your team can monitor your brand and see what people are saying about you.
Because it’s a collaborative tool, it’s hard to see the true benefits of SocialWok until you actually start using it. If it wasn’t for the deep integration with Google Apps and your standard social media websites, SocialWok might have been overlooked much like Google Wave. So, go sign up, invite the people you work with and let us know how it goes.

Rowdy Orbit has been searching for a tool like this for sometime. Allowing each of us to send thoughts, manage projects, follow threads, share information & docs, without having to open a ton of windows, while incurring the associated cost of too many opened windows for efficient communication via remote locations.
We've already put in play. And it's a world of difference. Whew. Now, we can drastically lower cost and reduce some windows. This is going to work out great.
I & Rowdy Orbit's COO really appreciates this post.

I have been looking for a collaboration product and have debated using Friendfeed private rooms, Google Wave and then Google groups. Perhaps this one trumps them all? I will have to take a look and see. Nice post. Very infomative. Thanks Rahsheen.

Your welcome. I think SocialWok brings something to the table that the other solutions don't. The Google integration is pretty powerful and the interface is easy to figure out because it's somewhat familiar to the stuff we already use. Most other solutions are just hacks that don't cover all your bases.
