PayPal Revamps iPhone App and Enables Bump Transfers
PayPal recently overhauled their iPhone App and added a few features to make it much more useful for users. Not only is the redesign visually appealing, but the interface itself has been greatly enhanced. You can get it for free here.
Also benefiting greatly from the release of this new PayPal application is the startup Bump Technologies. Bump is still a young startup and this partnership with PayPal should definitely give them a boost and some recognition.
Both PayPal and Bump have declined to share the details of their partnership, but the important part for users is the functionality Bump brings to the table. You can simple tap your iPhones together and specify an amount to transfer money. This will definitely be a powerful tool for many people. No more fumbling for cash or trying to figure out who owes what on a bill. Just tap your phones together and everything is squared away. This also makes it simpler and easier to get the ball rolling for your business. Rather than shake on it, simply touch phones and get to work instantly.
PayPal has actually had an application is the App Store since mid-2008, but has been oddly stingy with the features it enabled. With this update, we have a bunch of things activated that one would think already existed:
- Request Money – Being one of the prominently displayed items on the web page, it’s odd that this wasn’t easily accessible on the iPhone until now. If someone owes you for a bill or a tab, simply bill them for the amount.
- Transfer to Bank Account – This feature makes it easy to get money out of PayPal and into your actual bank account, although I’m not sure why anyone would want to do that.
- Tip Calculator – A must if you eat out and aren’t good at head math.
- Bill Splitter – Combine this with the ability to easily transfer money by bumping phones and eating out with family and friends just got a whole lot easier.
- PayPal For Kids – Did you know you can set up a sub-account for your kids? Well, now you can also manage it directly from your iPhone.
It looks like PayPal has been planning this mobile push and we should be seeing some updates on other platforms in the near future. If you’ve got an Android or Blackberry phone, be on the lookout for updates.
