Nexus One Now Compatible with AT&T 3G and Canada

The moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived. The Google Nexus One phone is now available for AT&T customers. Up until now, it’s 3G technology wasn’t compatible with AT&T and could only be used with T-Mobile and some other carriers. Apparently, AT&T and others use a different frequency, so these customers could only access 2G or Edge networks. Definitely no competition to 3G.

As of today, Google has released a new version of the Nexus One device that is fully compatible with AT&T’s 3G. It supports quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band 850/1900/2100MHz UMTS. This also covers the Rogers network in Canada. Nexus One devices can also be shipped to Canada via the web store.

It’s doubtful that most hardcore Apple fans will dump their iPhones in favor of the Nexus One. Google has no partnership with AT&T or anything like that, so there are no subsidies for purchasing the phone. You will need the unlocked version, which will cost you $529. At least you won’t have to sign a new contract.

As compared to the Droid and the iPhone, Nexus One sales have been pretty pitiful. According to Flurry, the iPhone reached one million units sold after 74 days. By comparison, the Droid phone hit 1.05 million in the same amount of time, outselling the iPhone. Looking at sales for the Nexus One, it looks like Google was way out of their league, only moving 135,000 units.

It’s not clear exactly why the Nexus One sold so poorly. Maybe customers were turned off by the shear proliferation of Nexus One ads or Google directly marketing the phone to them. It’s possible that customers were confused by the fact that the phone wasn’t really tied to a specific carrier. It could also be that the phone only being compatible with T-Mobile initially, made the choice too difficult for some potential customers.

Whatever the case may be, this new handset may serve to boost sales for Google. This also puts the Nexus One and iPhone in more direct competition, which will do nothing to cool the tension between Google and Apple. Are you going to buy a Nexus One now?

Yes, It’s doubtful that most hardcore Apple fans will dump their iPhones in favor of the Nexus One.

Today, Sprint announced that they will be getting the Nexus One. Two weeks after I got my Hero.

No fair.

Now wouldn't *that* be interesting.

Rahsheen says:

Is that a problem specific to the phone, or with the network?

Rob Nelson says:

I'm about to sell mine. Doesn't work very well. I'm really unhappy. The 3G doesn't connect worth a damn. Stuck on EDGE most of the time.

As much as I wanted a Nexus One, it was the carrier that made me not get one. I wasn't going to switch to AT&T or Verizon because their plans are too high for my taste. If T-Mobile's network was as good as AT&T's, I would have done switch a long time ago.

At the end, I settled for an HTC Hero and extended my contract with Sprint. Hero is a more solid performer than the Samsung's Moment and even thought I have to wait (a good while) for the 2.1 update, I don't feel I'm missing anything.

I really wish Google would have done a deal.

I would love for this to be the other way around, I need the iPhone to work on the T-Mobile network.
