Playstation Motion Controller Gets a Name: Move
Playstation’s new motion controller has been officially named the Playstation Move. Given the devices appearance, I’m sure any one of us could have come up with something a little more spicy. This controller lets you interact with certain games on the Playstation through the motion of your arms. If you’ve ever played a Wii or seen someone play a Wii, yeah that. It seems the bulbous glowing head of the controller serves a purpose. The motion of this protrusion is actually tracked by the Playstation Eye camera and translated into actions within the game.
We have the name, but the device still won’t be released until later this year. No specific date has been given as of yet. Once it is released, you will be able to get it in three ways:
- Get the controller alone (if you already have the Playstation Eye)
- Starter pack including the PS Move, PS Eye, and a game
- A full PS3 console pack including the console, PS Move wands, and the PlayStation Eye camera
The PS Move connects to your console via Bluetooth and may debut at less than $100. There is an extra attachment called the sub-controller with an analog stick that you hold in one hand, while the other hand manipulates the PS Move wand. Talk about multitasking.
During their press conference, Sony stated that about 20 titles will exist for the Playstation Move by the end of the fiscal year. Some that have been mentioned include:
Sports Champions (working title) that features archery, futuristic table tennis, and Roman Empire-style gladiator combat. There’s also a TV game show title called TV Superstars; a kung fu fighting game called Slider; a bare-knuckle brawler called Dukes; a shooting game called The Shoot; and a family oriented game called Move Party (working title).
Move Party? That sounds familiar. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 will also support the PS Move, offering players a more realistic golfing experience. I wonder if this one will require the sub-controller. Sony also stated that there were 36 companies on-board to support this new controller. Hopefully, this won’t result in a glut of nonsense games trying to cash in on the new device.
