Opera Mini 5 Beta For Android Released

OperaMini5-android-prOpera software has launched Opera Mini 5 Beta for Android today. This is the newest beta of the world’s most popular mobile phone browser, according to them. Any handset running Android can now get a fast and cost-efficient browser in Opera Mini, which already has 50 million users worldwide on Blackberry and Windows mobile devices.

The key feature of Opera Mini 5 is in it’s compression technology. Almost any handset can browse the web using Opera Mini because it compresses data by about 90 percent before ever sending the data to the phone. This proxy-type set up dramatically increases page load-times and may lower your phone bill depending on your data plan. Opera Mini also boasts an easy-to-use yet powerful user interface, placing most of the features you might find on a desktop browser in the palm of your hand. You’ll find things like:

  • Tabbed browsing – browse several sites and easily switch between them
  • Speed dial – thumbnails for your favorite bookmarks one click away when you open a new tab
  • Opera link – synchronize your bookmarks and speed dial settings with your desktop
  • Download manager – pause and resume downloads right from the browser
  • Password manager – no more fumbling with your logins and passwords. Android lets you login in with a single click.

“Android users should not have to compromise when it comes to surfing the Web on their phones. Opera Mini will give Android users a fast and cost-efficient access to their favorite Web sites and services.” -Dag Olav Norem, Vice President of Products, Opera Software

If you have an Android phone and want this optimized version of Opera Mini, you can download it directly to your phone:

  1. Visit the address m.opera.com/next using your phone’s default Web browser.
  2. Follow simple on-screen download instructions.
  3. After the download, locate Opera Mini on your phone among other Java applications

You can also search for “Opera Mini 5” in the Android Market. Also, don’t forget that you don’t have to have an Android phone to use Opera Mini 5. It’s already available for Blackberry phones, Windows Mobile phones, and most Java-enabled phones. Visit the Opera Mini 5 download page for details.

I downloaded Opera Mini 5 Beta to my Droid, and I still can't open gotomypc.com from my phone. I did so because I was getting the message that I needed a “Java enabled Browser”. Still doesn't work. Is there a setting I need to change?
