Sony Shuffles Gaming Organizations
Reorganizing its game unit to compensate for its growing presence in the video game market and looking to separate out its network services operations, Sony Computer Entertainment is changing their name and then splitting up its platform.
According to Gamasutra, SCE will now be known as SNE Platform, Incorporated. The unit will then split out its gaming businesses from that into a new unit called Sony Computer Entertainment. Confusing, right? The change will place focus solely on the PlayStation brand, still headed up by Kaz Hirai, while other businesses will be absorbed back into parent company Sony via SNE Platform. Networked services and mobile operations are just a few to be brought back into the fold.
Regional operations like SCEA and SCEE in North America and Europe, respectively, will not be changing or affected by the shift in organization — which goes into effect on April 1st of this year. A SCEE spokesperson told consumer website CVG Online that “this is a rather complicated maneuver involving the legal entity SCEI in Japan.” He continues by saying, “It has no effect on any regional HQ – ie. SCEA, SCEE, et cetera, are totally unaffected by this.”
The final purpose of the merger is to efficiently operate and further to strengthen its business through integration of the network services business of Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. With 3-D looking to make a huge splash in the next few years, Sony and it’s respective brands are preparing for the increasing need of new tech.
