Recognizr, Facial Recognition Software on Your Mobile Phone
With the app called Recognizr, you can see more than just a person’s face. This is a mobile prototype that allows you to use your phone in order to “see” who a person is and what web services and social networks they’re connected to. The basic phone number, address, full name and email are included within the snapshot you take, but that is all boring stuff compared to the other possibilities of this app.
This app is designed by Swedish software and design company The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) which also has local offices in Seoul, Korea and Chicago, Illinois (US). The vision of TAT is “To become a global leader in beautiful, usable, and high-performance user experiences on mobile devices.” They are well on their way with the creation of this app. TAT partnered with Polar Rose (A photo tagging startup) to allow the app to match 3D models of faces captured with the phone’s camera to those stored in a database on remote servers. Think of the facial recognition software we see used in TV shows such as ’24′, ‘CSI’ and even by the FBI except now it is on your phone. Once the face is recognized, the persons social networking profile icons will pop up. You may see the twitter icon, Skype icon, an address book icon and perhaps a Blogger icon. By tapping on the Twitter icon, you will see their Twitter address and their most recent tweets. Tapping on the Skpye icon will allow you to see their Skype name and make a call right then if you like. You will also be able to save their information right on the spot.

People worried about stalkers can rest easy. First of all, only users of the Android phone will be able to use this app. Second, both users must be signed up for the app and have a public profile active. Finally, you can choose how you would like to set up your profile and I would assume there are definitely some strong privacy settings built into the app and profile settings. TAT is currently working on finding the perfect partner to assist them in bringing this app to the commercial market in the next month or two. Keep an eye out for more stories on this app as this is an exciting development in the mobile app space. For the time being, iPhone users have another reason to be jealous of the Android. Take a look at the videos here and here for demonstrations of the app.
