Badges Like Us: The Foursquare Rap

Badges Like Us: The Foursquare Rap

Okay, if you don’t know if by now, I am a huge fan of social media in most of its forms.  Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, you name it, I probably have an account. One of my new favorites is Foursquare. I’ll admit it, I’m hooked. When I first heard about the location-based social networking app, I was more than a little skeptical. I mean why in the world would you want to broadcast your location to everyone?

Fast forward a month later and I’m totally hooked. I’ve finally gotten my first mayorship (yay Sprint Store!) and I have a couple of badges under my belt including Explorer, Swarm, and Super User. Just to give you some insight to Foursquare, since I’ve signed up, I’ve had 22 nights out with 55 check-ins. So imagine my surprise and glee when I found the link to The Foursquare Rap, an ode to the journey of checking in, copping badges, and just the addicting nature of social networking’s latest craze.

The YouTube video created by @borismsilver and @thenewb is fast becoming the topic of tweets and a number of articles. The two men rap over T.I.’s “Swagga Like Us”. Yeah, it’s a little dorky, but I couldn’t help but relate. I actually have that Crunked badge (don’t judge me, I like to have fun!) and there is an undeniable excitement to pulling out your cell phone and checking in to that first spot of the night. And I’m waiting for the day that I become the mayor of a place that has a reward for my loyal patronage.

I think the thing that draws me to Foursquare is the competitive aspect. Anyone who know me offline knows that I absolutely hate to lose. So when I check the leaderboard for the week and see one of my friends has the top spot, it makes me want to be a huge social butterfly. Those events that I was waffling about at the beginning of the week, they go from a maybe to a definitive yes. As an indirect result of my chronic need to win, I’ve been meeting a lot more folks than I normally would over the course of one month.

Foursquare, like Twitter and Facebook before it has officially cemented itself in the social media consciousness. Check out the video and prepare to check in.
