Obama: “Keep the Internet Open”

If you missed out on Obama’s State of the Union on YouTube, where viewers were able to ask Obama any question they had on their mind, you can still find some really great footage even if you weren’t able to participate real-time.  Case in point is Obama’s response to the #1 question in jobs and economic development section, a question regarding his commitment to keeping the internet open and neutral:

“…we don’t want to create a bunch of gateways that prevent somebody who doesn’t have a lot of money but has a good idea from being able to start their next YouTube or their next Google on the Internet…”

“…we’re getting pushback obviously from some of the bigger carriers who’d like to charge more fees and extract more money from wealthier customers, but we think that runs counter to the whole spirit of openess that has made the internet such a powerful engine for not only economic growth but also for the generation of new ideas and creativity.”

Thanks for commenting Mario…you shouldn't be a stranger ;)

Great post! The President has always stated and did in fact campaign heavy on the message that the internet should be open. I remember when he visited Google early on to learn more about the issue. This issue needs to be resolved and I'm also hoping the Broadband grants being given out will increase more people of color using broadband not for consumption but for creation. In June I'm hosting a TV special on this issue and will keep you posted.
