Microsoft and Apple in Talks to Oust Google?
There’s been some not-so-quiet rumblings on the net that Apple and their recent talks with Microsoft. Why in the world would otherwise mortal enemies come to the table to talk business? One word — Google or the lack thereof. According to BusinessWeek, Apple is in talks with Microsoft to ditch Google as the default search engineĀ in favor of Microsoft’s Bing on the iPhone.
While the up and coming search engine is turning up the heat in the search rivalry, this is not so much a testament to Bing’s undeniable awesomeness, so much as a not-so-subtle jab at Google. The reigning king of search has ruffled the feathers of quite a few mobile phone makers with the launch of the Nexus One. The phone has yet to make any serious headway in the smartphone market, reportedly selling only 20,000 units during the first week. Google’s new venture puts it in direct competition with Apple.
Google and Apple were already on thin ice thanks to Google rolling out Android. One can imagine that Steve Jobs was none too happy when Google started pushing the OS and even less pleased when it started taking off. If you don’t know what I mean, allow me to reintroduce Motorola Droid, 2009′s gadget of the year. The drama only deepened when Apple denied two Google apps entry to the app store.
If this enemy of my enemy is my friend deal were to go through, Microsoft comes out the biggest winner. It will have access to the millions of iPhone users and a serious chance of giving Google some serious competition. In fact, Google might want to watch its back, as it continues to expand its empire in an attempt to mimic the British empire of old, revolts to the crown will get more frequent. We’ve already seen Rupert Murdoch raise a stink and threaten to hide his news sites from the search engine and there have been quite a few bloggers and journos referring to Google as a real-live Skynet.
As we wait to see if this deal between Apple and Microsoft comes to fruition, I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for a Google-branded terminator.
