12 Days of Techmas: Chumby One
by Sherri L. Smith
Cute name for cute tech. The Chumby is the cuddly soft internet clock radio that did a little bit of everything. One of the coolest things about it was the squeezably soft Italian leather that surrounded the little doodad. It was just made to be touched, the new pet rock. It was kind of like an information Tamagotchi.
The cute, cuddly version now dubbed Chumby Classic has welcomed a new member to the Chumby family. It may not be as huggable, but it still has that Chumby charm. The Chumby One like its predecessor is a jack-of-all-trades. It’s an internet radio, alarm clock, digital photo frame, wi-fi enabled social networking, information machine. It has 1500 free apps. As with all app stores that number can always increase thanks to the dedicated community of developers that are constantly rolling out new stuff.
In leiu of the Italian leather the Chumby One is decked out in ABS plastic and looks like a small television set. It has a 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen, a high speed USB 2.0 port, 2W mono speakers, and a FM tuner. The biggest draw about both Chumby products is the amount of things you can do with it. It has Pandora, Twitter, Ebay, news and stock tickers all in one handy little box. It the kind of gift you didn’t know you wanted until someone gives it to you. You can score a Chumby One for $119.95 at the Chumby store.
