The Web Turns Red for World AIDS Day
by Maurice CherryToday is World AIDS Day — an international campaign to increase awareness about AIDS and celebrate the lives of those past and present. The social web is showing its support by turning red. Both Twitter and Facebook are joining forces with the (RED) campaign in some unique ways to help raise money for research.
Twitter’s homepage is sporting a nice crimson facelift for today, plus they are turning tweets red via hashtags. Just add #red, #worldaidsday, or #laceupsavelives to turn your tweet red in honor of the occasion. I also discovered this afternoon that adding the word Africa to your tweet will also turn it red, more than likely a keyword match for the (RED) campaign which raises awareness about AIDS in Africa specifically.
If you don’t want to turn your tweets red, you can also show your support by adding a Twibbon to your Twitter avatar. Just visit this link to start the process.
Facebook is also working in conjunction with the (RED) campaign. Just visit www.facebook.com/joinred to show your support. You can share a (RED) campaign video about AIDS in Africa or change your Facebook picture to one of the eight provided icons.
Search engine giants Yahoo and Google are both showing support for World AIDS Day with links to websites for information about the disease and ways you can help donate to the cause. YouTube is even live-streaming a special Alicia Keys World AIDS Day concert tonight at 8pm EST.
It’s great to see the web participating in this day and helping fund research to find a cure for AIDS. What other websites have you seen which are also observing World AIDS Day?
