Compose and Share Music Online with Noteflight
Noteflight is a web application that gives you the ability to compose music right in the browser. Drag the notes around the staff and create your composition with some pretty advanced features and tools.
Compose and arrange music online, wherever you are
Share written music with your friends, band, students, teachers
Embed music notation in your own web pages or blog
The Noteflight Score Editor is a top-notch application that lets you create, edit, print, display, and play back music notation. Not only can you create your own scores, but you can also make them public or submit them to Noteflight’s online library of music.
Using Noteflight’s editing palette, you simply point and click to put the notes where you want them on the staff. Noteflight supports just about every type of note you need and the interface is pretty intuitive given how much you can do with it.
Even if you can’t read music or don’t really understand musical notation (I can read as much music as I can read Spanish), you can still enter notes using the corresponding letters on your keyboard. As you enter notes via either method, it is played back so that you can see if things sound right. Drag and drop is fully supported as well, in case you need to make slight adjustments.
One of the coolest features of Noteflight is the ability to share your creations with others. There are a few ways to do this:
- The first is to simply allow others to browse your score when you save it. This adds it to Noteflight’s searchable and browesable directory.
- You can share your music by passing around the URL from the edit page. People clicking the link don’t even have to have an account to view and play back the score.
- The third method for sharing your music is to embed it directly on your blog or website. The player auto-scrolls to keep up with the current note.
We previously covered Myna, a web-based audio editor from Aviary which is like Pro Tools in your browser. Noteflight is another tool to add to your arsenal that gives you finer grained control over the creation of your actual melody. It’s sharing features also open up the possibility for collaborations and remixes with other musicians. I have never come across a free musical notation editor with this much power under the hood.
