“Transformers 2″ star Tyrese Gibson is expanding his resume to include comic book impresario. His new comic book, Mayhem, is the first standalone e-book to be featured on iTunes 9. The $1.99 comic is being called a LP due to the fact that it comes bundled with a making-of video, an exclusive track from Gibson, and other extras.
This is definitely a good look for Tyrese, since his comic can be promoted to the approximately 100 million active iTunes accounts. But don’t think that Apple is getting the short end of the stick. Even though Steve Jobs downplayed the likelihood of Apple getting into the digital reader game, you can bet that Mayhem is the company’s tenative first steps into the e-book waters. Especially since the e-book interface is designed to work on touchscreen products like an iPhone, iPod Touch, or gasp!, a soon to debut Apple tablet. Amazon and Sony better protect their necks.
Mayhem joins the comic book giants Marvel Comics who debuted their motion comics earlier this yearon iTunes and Archie Comics who’s old school antics actually earned the Riverdale High alum the top spot as the most downloaded comic on iTunes.
