NYT Blog Features Appfrica Labs Founder Jon Gosier

The New Times Blog Freakonomics: The Hidden Side of Everything (African Entrepreneurs) featured a story written by Dwyer Gunn about Appfrica Labs founder, Jon Gosier. Jon is a venture capitalist who runs the technology incubator in Kampala, Uganda.

According to the article, Jon took a non-traditional route to both technology and Uganda. He was working for media mogul Tyler Perry when he decided to explore technology’s impact on the music industry (think early Napster), while at the same time his girlfriend was offered a job in Uganda. He followed her and the rest is history.

This has been a stellar year for Jon, who is a contributor to and partner with BlackWeb20.com. This past summer he had the opportunity to participate as a fellow and speaker at the prestigious TEDGlobal2009 (Technology, Entertainment, Design) in Oxford, England.

Tom Rielly, Community Director of TED Conferences says:

Dear Robin, Thanks for the shout out on Jon and his amazing work. Magatte in the same article was a TED Fellow in 2007 in Arusha. you might also like to talk to NYC-based TED Fellow Kyra Gaunt, our amazing ethnomusicologist/anthropologist/chanteuse, or William Kamkwamba, the young Malawi windmill inventor William Kamkwamba. I can hook you up with either or both, or some of our other amazing African and African American Fellows.

Cheers,
Tom
