Be the Difference: Mozilla Announces Week of Service

by Jon Gos Be the Difference: Mozilla Announces Week of Service

Mozilla and Idealist have announced a partnership for Mozilla’s Week of Service—a week where volunteers work with non-profits to “make the web a better place for everyone.”

From September 14 to September 21, members of the Mozilla network (i.e. anyone who registers) will be encouraged to help with hardware, software, social media, and anything else that has to do with the web and technology.

If there’s something you’ve been meaning to learn (”What the heck does ‘Web 2.0? mean, and how might it help advance our mission?”) or install (say, that gently used printer you received as a donation) or network (that old desktop computer you’re hoping an intern can use)…this might be the perfect week to get help, get connected, and get answers. (Idealist)

Mozilla lists the following as possible service opportunities:

  • Teach senior citizens how to use the Web.
  • Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of supporters.
  • Install a wireless network at a school.
  • Create Web how-to materials for a library’s computer cluster.
  • Refurbish hardware for a local computer center.
  • Help a non-profit update its website or database.

Knowledge needed isn’t limited to knowing how to code. If you know anything about the web, Mozilla’s partner organizations can use you. Over a thousand volunteer opportunities are currently listed on Idealist. If you’re a non-profit looking for a volunteer, list your organization on Idealist.
