Tech Week In Review for June 26th

You can now share files on FriendFeed

Items on FriendFeed that get the most action are those with photos. They help to engage the viewer by standing out against a wall of text. Now, FriendFeed has activated file sharing, which allows you to upload just about any file you’d like. This has serious implications for other services that provide similar features. This basically includes any service that allows you to post files to Twitter.

One of the neatest features is being able to upload an audio file and have the player emdedded right inside of FriendFeed. See how I shared “Social Media Mogul“ for an example.

To share files on friendfeed.com, simply click the “Files” link underneath the post box and select which files you want to include. You can also share files by including them as attachments on emails sent to share@friendfeed.com. (Learn more about posting via email.)

This has been an especially popular request from organizations and companies that collaborate using FriendFeed groups. We’ve certainly been using this feature internally and have found it extremely useful. We hope it’ll help make you and your collaborators even more productive, and a little more attached to FriendFeed.

Digsby Updates

buddy_list_search

Erick from the Digsby team hit me up a few days ago to let me know about the new major release of Digsby, which should have already gone live.  Digsby is the only product that helps people effectively manage most of their IM, email, and social network accounts from one application. Nearly three months of development effort has gone into this release and it includes several significant improvements.

  • Performance: We’ve optimized performance from the ground up, reducing overall CPU usage by about 50%
  • Buddy List Search: Press Ctrl+F to easily search your buddy list or the web
  • Emoticons: Added four new emoticon packs to choose from
  • File Transfers: Improved the reliability of AIM, ICQ, and MSN file transfers
  • And More: Over 100 other bug fixes and enhancements!

This new build definitely moves Digsby closer to the #1 instant messaging client and if you’re having trouble keeping up or are looking for a better way, you should give it a look.

Facebook Everyone Button

Facebook is itching to make itself more publically available. Facebook is arguably the most popular social networking site out there, but one major reason that sites like Twitter and FriendFeed continue to flourish is Facebook’s walled-garden approach to social media. Many people actually want to share some things with the world and not just a small group of close friends. Facebook’s new Everyone Button allows you to do just that on a per item basis, regardless of your privacy settings. So, even if you have a private Facebook profile, you can place items you choose outside of that wall of protection. (TechCrunch)
