BabelWith.Me: Web-based Chat in Over 45 Languages
Discussion is a big part of the current web as we know it. Services that make it easy to communicate and discuss things are the ones that seem to see the most success. Facebook connects us with family and friends with integrated chat features. Twitter allows us to follow interesting people and engage them in conversation in a somewhat broken manner. BabelWith.Me provides a simple, real-time, web-based chat experience much like TinyChat. The main difference here is that BabelWith.Me allows you to chat with anyone, regardless of what language they speak.
BabelWith.Me wasn’t created by your average tech start-up, but was developed by LifeChurch.tv, a site which does a weekly broadcast in an effort to “lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ.”
LifeChurch.tv developed BabelWith.me to communicate with people around the globe… everyone from international church partners to individuals attending our Church Online. We’re sharing it for free so you can use it to connect with others in our increasingly global world.
BabelWith.Me makes it simple to create a new chatroom. There is no need to login or create an account. One click creates your chatroom and gives you a unique link to it. You can easily share the chat by passing on the link or using the buttons in the sidebar to share the chat via Twitter, Facebook, or email. The service is actually powered by Google Translate on the back-end.
This is a pretty exciting service because it could help break down barriers in communications world-wide. This is obviously just a small step, but it could be the first step in an important movement. We have already seen how Google Wave integrates a real-time translation feature as well. Many FriendFeed users are well aware of the huge Persian community there that we really have no way to talk to. I think BabelWith.Me is thinking ahead in making sure language is no barrier in talking about important issues that cross borders.
