GreetBeatz.com Makes Commissioned Music Easy
It is always great to see what start-ups are doing, especially when we tend to get bogged down with everything else in the world and think we have seen just about every idea or start-up there is. GreetBeatz is a refreshing change. Based in the Valley and started by ’05 Standford grads Ashvin Kumar and Chris Estreich, GreatBeatz’s concept isn’t over complicated. It uses Facebook Connect to allow users to not only login to the site but to also interact with the commissioned song on Facebook and with your friends. It keeps track of a song’s comments from Facebook in your account on GreatBeatz as well and gives you the option to interact there.
Because the site’s sole way to login/register is connecting your account to Facebook, once your connected GreatBeatz has just about all the information they need from you to get a song commissioned. You’ll just need to specify a friend and enter in some lyrical inspiration.
They produce the song (mine took only 3 days), and let you know via Facebook when it is done. Check out the song I commissioned for Markus:
Hot right?! It was produced by one of their Artists Newside. While commissioning a song isn’t the cheapest thing you can do at $15 a pop, you can see the quality is great and well worth it. It’s important to note that they are currently trying to find the right price point for consumers and “want to start where it is affordable for everyone.” The commissioned Artist not only go off of the information you provide for inspiration, if you include say…your website…they actually do a little research and include it on the song. The price you pay for commissioning a song goes mostly to the artist with GreetBeatz taking a small processing fee similar to how Ebay works. GreetBeatz currently has a network of about 4 producers and if you are an artist yourself you can apply to be on-board on their site. The evaluation process is simple, you get a sample track to work with and it is evaluated by the Founders and the Lead Artist they have on staff.
It is just the first month of the project but something Ashvin and Chris have been thinking about for a while. They decided to leave their jobs at the end of last year to work on GreetBeatz and some additional projects they are working on. Because the concept for GreetBeatz is so simple they literally had the basics of the site up in a bout 2 weeks. When speaking with Ashvin he emphasized “We don’t really worry about a finished product”and instead choose to launch products and iterate quickly.
The end goal of GreetBeatz is to have a marketplace to commission any artist, not just music. The project currently isn’t funded at all and Ashvin mentions they want to avoid raising any money at all. Right now all efforts are being put into how people are using the product and “….introducing people to the concept, our next step is to open it up.” Some features they will be including soon are the ability to download tracks you’ve purchased. So if you get something super hot like Markus you can make it your ringtone
. As mentioned before the site is currently for Facebook users, GreetBeatz doesn’t have any immediate plans to expand to other platforms just yet.
If by now you don’t have the itch to try out GreetBeatz for yourself maybe this coupon code will help. Just enter in ‘blackwebfans‘ and commission your own song for just 10 bucks. Don’t forget to share them with us here too!
Big-up to Tristan for hooking us up and giving us the heads up on GreetBeatz.
