You are correct when you state &quot;these companies simply don’t know how to monetize these markets because they don’t understand the complexities involved.&quot;  However, there are also many companies who do understand and are rationally pursuing these markets for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.  The winners in these new contests may not represent the status quo.  This is why the technology continues to be viewed as a potentially disruptive, double-edged sword.  Rational actors are not evaluating opportunities based on the advice of the NYT.
