Insightful article. I am happy to see that this problem with diversity is noticed outside of the united states. I know European, Israeli, and Asian startups have their own issues. Tech Crunch is constantly reporting on individuals who are trying to raise awareness to European Start ups. (See http://tinyurl.com/RobKleins-Article) You have Yossi Vardi giving a different approach to start ups that counters the idea of. Put enough funding behind it and it may make a return. He is trying to convince the rest of the world to lower their standards towards Israeli start ups.

Unfortunately as we have seen with the Black Tech start ups we are alone. The cool thing about it is that their is no 1 specific portal controlling everything. Or one major source that everyone relies on. My suggestion is collaboration. Starting here right now. Its become pretty obvious that this site has become a forum to some of the best and brightest of the rapidly evolving tech world we live in. We cannot expect anytime soon some magical black VC firm to open up the flood gates and begin funding every idea.

How can we support each other?

I may be a great coder but I am a horrible designer. So that means I need to partner up with someone who can design the site to my specifications. Its important for us to give each other constructive criticism. (Thats part of the reason why global grind is not a success) We are quick to judge however when we know what the problem is we are not so quick to find a solution. Its hard to swallow pride on occasions when we try to approach individuals in the urban market who in my view got really lucky on monetizing a untapped market. It's time to contact some of these site owners and see exactly what their goals are.

Sharing information.

Its important we share some of our analytics with each other to showcase the value of our market. There are options of being able to show that your users are traveling to other sites within your same target demographic. If my site is averaging around 50k uniques per month and your site is getting 200k per month however my ROI is higher than yours, whats going on? Lets start to be open. The more you know about the other sites within your niche market the more leverage you have when going to the ad firms or the advertisers directly. Learn as much about your audience. Share it and compare. The more you know....

Fund each other.

This is the most important because this is what our parents and grandparents have been telling us. Support your own. If a new tech start up is offering innovative solutions to the web, lets figure out a way to get them notoriety and most importantly business. Let them use your site and resources if their technology will benefit you. If not it is your job to help them to the best of your ability. Funding is more than capital you can invest or waste on a project. It can be something as small as letting a group use your basement as office space.

Think hard about what you can do. Jon what you are doing in Africa is something we can all aspire to become. Keep up the good work. Good luck guys. I know we dont have enough money to fund something as of now. However think hard about what you as a site owner can do to help.

Peace
