Tech Week in Review: YouTube, Oprah, FriendFeed DM’s, and StumbleUpon
by rahsheenYouTube Imploding?
YouTube seems to be scrambling for a way to make money. They’ve recently made deals with major studios to bring you such jaw-dropping attractions as TJ Hooker and Married with Children along with 1000’s of other full-length shows. They’re also adding hundreds of movie tittles as well. Also, their new “Google TV Ads Online” product will allow advertisers to stick ads in the middle of these new offerings. (more at TC)
ZOMG! Oprah is on Twitter!
Yes folks, the end of Twitter draws near as Oprah (@oprah) will be talking about Twitter on her show today (full story here). She’ll have Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) as a guest. If you hadn’t heard, Ashton is in a race with CNN to see who hits one million followers first. Among other things, Ashton plans to donate $100,000 to Malaria No More to secure 10,000 mosquito nets for at-risk families. At the end of the day (I hate that phrase), I’m pretty sure Oprah may blow right by Ashton and CNN.
Update: Looks like Ashton won
FriendFeed DM’s and Twitter Feed Update
FriendFeed’s shiny new DM feature has added email support so that you can receive email updates when you get a direct message. This means it works closer to the Twitter version. One exciting twist is that you can reply to the email to respond to the DM. There have also been updates made to FriendFeed’s Twitter feed that make tweets show up almost instantly in FriendFeed. Full discussion on FriendFeed.
StumbleUpon Is Back In The Game
StumbleUpon founders Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith have bought the service back from eBay. StumbleUpon has been pretty stagnant, but we may see some new things coming from them now that the service has leaders again. There were also rumors that eBay was going to sell Skype, but it looks like they’ve decided to aim for an IPO in 2010 instead.

Gee says:
I think they may be trying to compete with Hulu too, and remain the top dog in the game. Although Hulu usually LINKS to videos on other sites that don't necessarily show the whole episode/move in one clip, maybe YouTube is doing this the blow them out of the water? Not only they getting the permission from major networks to post their videos on THEIR website, they're getting full clips. (Just an off the wall thought.)
I wouldn't be surprised if YouTube one day adds all the television stations on it, to where they can all be viewed on YouTube. This would be a good deal, as it would be a way for these television networks to make money. The economy is bad, and many people are dishing their cable and or internet. Some of the people who get rid of the cable/internet at home, may go to the library to use their free internet, where they would have access to all these shows.
