Monetizing your Twitter Feed

by Angela Monetizing your Twitter Feed

So many people have been trying to figure out how Twitter as a platform is going to monetize its’ service. Not long to follow is how individuals can monetize their Twitter feeds. I’ve spoken with a few people (I won’t name any names) and they are monetizing Twitter the good ole fashioned way, not with a service/plugin/or any other feature. They are simply selling ads based off of offline transactions and manually posting ads as updates through their own Twitter account. Some marked as Ads, some that aren’t. These type of updates walk a fine line of actually being ethical since your followers don’t necessarily opt-in to advertising when they choose to follow you. Needless to say this type of activity can seriously affect your credibility if it backfires.

Services like the newly launched Tinker are positioned to develop a twitter ad network and do a revenue share with those micro-bloggers that are apart of the network. Cool. Magpie is a network that is actually very similar to Tinker except it will push ads based off of relevant interests and not specific events.

I’m sure Tinker’s network will evolve to this eventually as well. Though it would make more sense for Twitter to add this service to their platform. Like Adify for Twitter except owned by Twitter. Someone like Markus or I could easily create our own Black Micro-blogging Network on Twitter then, lol!

So what IF you want to do it all on your own? You have your own website or blog and want to offer advertising or allow people to advertise their Twitter presence to your audience…ethically. An alternative to try is Twitter Brand Sponsor ads by Socialable Ads, a product from Mashable. The concept is actually very simple and can be implemented (sans any bugs or tech issues…we had some when trying to use it) very quickly if you are on a Wordpress platform. What Twitter Brand Sponsors allows you to do is still monetize (if you choose) the Twitter accounts of brands you WANT to be associated with. There is no forcing advertisements through your Twitter feed and on to your followers, thus no worries about keeping your cred.

If you choose to offer this type of sponsorship or advertising here are few things to keep in mind no matter how you decide to implement it:

Don’t go all MySpace on your Followers.

Force feeding ads and random promotions is not cool and negatively impacts you or your brand and the receivers experience with the product. Instead, introduce advertisements into your organic conversations.

Don’t be a Snake.

Mark an ad as an ad and a sponsor as a sponsor. Misleading your followers could alienate your readers and ruin your brand.

Keep it Kosher.

Stay relevant, authentic, and genuine.

I have Black Web 2.0 as one of my RSS-feeds. So, I don't always come to your blog to comment. I just wanted you to know that your reviews of various products and blogging strategies is very much appreciated.

re: monetizing Twitter accounts - have you implemented any of the ideas or products that you write about in this post?
  • I've tested Magpie, but haven't used it full on because I wasn't sure how relevant the ads would be. Tinker's ad network isn't fully launched yet. I was most interested in using Mashable's SocialAds wordpress plugin and did try to give that a good try however it is broken for us. If you see how it is implemented on Mashable though it looks great and isn't intrusive at all so that is my preference above all options. We are still trying to get it to work.
  • I use Magpie. Just trying it out. It doesn't seem to have lost me any followers yet. I'm very selective about the ads I let them post to my followers, though.
  • Yep makes sense, have you tried any tech related ads w/ them? If so I may give them a try, I was testing it for a client I had on their account but it was unrelated to tech or anything Black and was more of like a general market kind of thing. Needless to say there was an abundance there ;)
  • Really finding relevant ads are slim pickings. There are a couple of gadget
ads, but that's about it. I also don't authorize anything that requires a
sale only stuff that pay-per-view, so that narrows the pool even further.
  • I use Magpie as well. The only thing that annoys me is the random pop ups. I would tweet 20 times, but then... it won't pop up until my 75th tweet. It's mad behind. :(
  • It can be glitchy!

I use MagPie i love it sofar i have earned $300.00 since signing up with them in October.
I will be interviewing the CEO sometime in April they are headquartered in Germany.
Once i made a foolish error of sending my earning to advertising versus Paypal i emailed them in 4 hours the money was posted to my PayPal. Additionally my earning have consistently increased as my follower count has increased. Right now they are paying me $6.27 in Euros per tweet they send out via my account which once i received that amount in US Dollars its more :). As far as followers i havent lost any that complained to me.
  • *Yeah, yeah- I know. Too lazy to sign up with Disqus. *
I think just about anything can work if- like Rahsheen said- you're selective. If you have time to keep an eye on stuff like that, rock that ish. :) I don't know if I'll even monetize my twitter stream, but on my sites I use a combination Google AdSense, Glam, BlogHer, and a few relevant affiliates. Pretty simple, but works for me!
