Can Google’s Interest based Advertising work for you?
by AngelaYesterday Google announced a new advertising product called Google Ad Preferences. Google Ad Preferences will serve you ads based on what websites you have surfed on the web, much different than how it serves ads based on content on a page currently. The program will be cookie based and will automatically determine what type of Interests you have based on your surfing habits, it also gives you the option to add your own manually. I gave it a try myself and added my own just to see what type of Interest categories Google had implemented to date. These are the interests I added:
Arts & Humanities – Visual Arts
Business
Industries – Design
Internet
Social Networks & Online Communities
Social Networks & Online Communities – Blogging Resources & Services
Social Networks & Online Communities – Social Networks
Not surprisingly there were no categories for interests that may involve race specific interests or interests attributed to a specifc culture…say Hip-hop. Like most of you I am often frustred already by the type of Google ads that are served on my own site contextually. Intead of actually being contextual many of us get the typical African-American dating site ad with an occasionl inappropriate ad (though they have gotten better IMO). As I am typing this look to your right at the 300×250 ad we have on the article level page in the sidebar. Nine times out of ten it is a dating ad merely because I have mentioned it in this article and it disregauds all the other contextual info I am writing about: Google, Advertising, Social Networking, Business, Design, etc. Chances are with Google Ad Preferences there will be no difference in they type of ads that get served for those interested in topics surrounding a culture or race. I’m curious to see what type of ads will serve if my surfing habits are for example: Black Web 2.0>Facebook>iPhoneFreak>NYTimes/Technoloy>RushmoreDrive>Inc.com. These are just 5 of the 40-ish or so tabs I currently have up in Firefox. More than likely it will serve me Tech and Business related ads, the ads that I will likely get related to the AA sites that I have surfed will be AA Dating ads which is totally fine if I was looking for a date and only interested in dating within my race. But in reality I am not looking for either. All this just really makes me think: If Google can barely serve me ads I see as relevant on many AA sites can they really serve me better ads based on my Interests from surfing habits if that includes interests related to cultures or race?
