Inside Tour of MusicMogul.com

Do you have what it takes to become the next big thing in music? Well Rodney Jerkin’s Music Mogul may be the platform that puts you path to stardom. In a previous post, we discussed some of it’s features including avatar creation, the ability to watch musical performances, play games, and interact with people with similar music preferences.

Music Mogul’s tagline “Make Your Mark” hints at more of a platform to help emerging artists. Jerkins, in a recent video on Young Hollywood discussed how each user of his virtual world has a chance to get a record deal online by creating an avatar, and uploading a video, and demoing their music to executives on the site. “It’s like a video game experience mixing with the music industry.” says Jerkins. “You put your video up, get discovered by real executives…we plan that every 3 months you [discovered talent] gets flown out to L.A to do a demo with me.” The hopes that Music Mogul “allows new talent to be discovered and… create(s) a whole new music industry through a virtual world experience.”

The concept for Music Mogul is very interesting one. The functionality looks very close to Second Life allowing users to “make their mark” without leaving their home. I never became a member of Second Life, but I know the number of people who frequented that virtual world has declined over time. I’m not sure if Music Mogul will be the place to house the music fans who are leaving Second Life, or if their focus of targeting unsigned artists will be beneficial. Unsigned artist are currently using tools like, YouTube, MySpace and other social networks to kick start their careers. Once Music Mogul launches, it will be interesting to observe whether the virtual world will be an extension of where artists have a presence online to create an additional following or if the virtual world draws a different artist demographic.

  • It seems strange that more successful recording artist, music producers, musicians and songwriters, etc. have not created more opportunities like this. Perhaps if they had the music business would have tapped into more business models to generate additional streams of revenue.

From all the social networking sites it doesn’t seem as though there’s any shortage of hopeful’s seeking to be the next big recording artist.

In any event hopefully the artist that get the opportunity know something of the business to ensure they are able to retain some percentage of their publishing rites/rights.
