Blackplanet.com Hacked

by Maurice Cherry Blackplanet.com Hacked

You may remember from earlier in the year our report on a group of hackers known worldwide as “Anonymous” hacking into popular hip-hop websites SOHH.com and AllHipHop.com. It’s rumored that the group may be behind a similar attack which took place earlier today on BlackPlanet.com.

Comments on a press release from NewsOne raises concern if whether or not BlackPlanet.com members’ personal information was compromised during this cyber attack. The attack primarily was made on the BlackPlanet.com’s Forums section; as of this writing, over 500 posts titled “WHITE POWER” are in nearly every subsection of the site’s forums (done by “tyrone4112″). Based on the forum’s timestamp, the attacks occurred this morning between 8:00am -9:00am. There is a current thread on the BlackPlanet.com forums with members voicing their concerns and anger, but no official word has come from BlackPlanet.com forum moderators or site owners concerning the attack.

No, that's definitely a hack. Black Planet users don't have the ability to post forum topics like these guys did. Only BP administrators can. Users can only click on a topic and enter their opinion within the forum, not actually create one.

Oops. I'm looking again. I take that back... Yeah, these may have just been posts.
  • @Orinthea Smith -- BP is still very much a major player and it Black Voices, and BET are still the top trafficked "African-American" sites. What makes BP even more relevant, as of late, is that it was purchased by Radio One/Interactive One and bundled into its overall Web strategy.

This is not a hack, it is spam. There is a 'Start a New Topic" button right in the graphic that the article provides. Any member can start a new topic.

So sure, someone can register for BlackPlanet.com and post spam in forums. That is quite possible, That has nothing to do with member information being compromised. It is annoying, but it is not a serious security threat.
  • i would rather have spam hacks and websites shut down then rope and trees any day
