Soulja Boy’s Bird Walk

It was over year ago that we declared Soulja Boy a Web 2.0 Wonder. Well he’s back at it again, but this time with a new hook. With his new song and dance, “Bird Walk,” fans are given the opportunity to learn the dance and upload their own video to be featured on the Soulja Boy MySpace page. And there’s also a chance of winning a pair of YUMS (the YUMS store carries the Soulja Boy Signature Shoe and a Bird Walk T-shirt) .

This contest follows the teen sensation’s “Let’s Go Platinum in a Week,” video campaign, where in a two-part video feature on YouTube, Soulja Boy urges his audience to buy his CD so he won’t turn into a one hit wonder.

So what’s the point of all this marketing hype, especially when the CD isn’t even come out until later this month? Well, the Bird Walk video already gained more than 1,792,650 views on YouTube and more than 566,000 views and 1130 comments on MySpace. It’s already going viral and as expected, it’s getting people amped about the CD right in time for the younger demographic’s completion of their wish lists.

Surprisingly, as of the time of this post, the contest didn’t have any entries on YouTube. We’ll just wait and see if this dance can become as popular as “Crank That,” and if all of this online marketing brings in offline dollars.

  • Disclosure: SB Tell'EM needs WTF tattoo'd on his forehead.

    Lol.

Oddly, this video is pure genius.

He knows his demographic. He repeats his message at nauseum. It's very viral. It's mad real. He addresses the criticisms. He does that time-honored tradition of asking yourself a question and answering it, almost making the viewer feel like 'he knows where I am coming from'.

That is what the internet is. Viral. Unfiltered.

    And a haven for baffoons.

While I will 'le <sigh>' and completely hate on this dude for his 'props to the slave masters' comment, I cannot be mad at the pure, ignorant hustle.

He's like the brainchild of 3 6 Mafia (who I like for their rawness) and 50 cent (who I hate b/c he has sold every part of himself).

    Bad for Hip Hop? Yes.
Bad for the impressionable youth? Yes.

He will become the defacto example of what the Internet can do with proper hustle and unabashed ignorance, however.</sigh>
  • I don't like none of this trendy stuff but then again I'm probably a lot older than you and most of your readers. I'm old school like Mohammed Ali and Buddy Guy. Old school but hip enough still to get on the internet and browse around. These kids got to make everything viral. That's because they got no real game if you know what I mean. Now you take old James Brown and there you go. He didn't need no viral anything! He already HAD what it takes.
  • The crank that thing has unexpectedly hit the music and dance scenes. I'm not going to be surprised if this will be popular too.
