Tethering for the iPhone

Tethering for the iPhone

Today brought a new wave of expectations for current iPhone users. AT&T Mobility chief Ralph de la Vega confirmed that iPhone 3G users will “soon” be able to use the phone as a wireless modem – some reportedly say 2009. I have been contemplating purchasing an iPhone for over a year now. After I read about this amazing technology offering, I realized my iPhone envy must come to an end! The official term for this service offering is called “tethering” that involves using the phone’s mobile data connection to get online. With the millions of people that use the iPhone as a mobile device, I understand why there may have been hesitancy from the carrier to allow users to use the phone for an internet connection as the amount of traffic could overwhelm the network.

While this may seem like a perfect alternative to purchasing a wireless card, I am almost positive tethering for the iPhone will not be free. This service could be beneficial while you are waiting in the airport or having coffee at Starbucks. However, if the service is an additional $50+ a month, I would only be using the internet on the phone and finding an Ethernet or an alternative wireless connection for my laptop! As 2009 quickly approaches, I’m sure Apple will make a strategic move with the price and functionality of tethering for the iPhone as well as new applications that will make this the must-have phone in comparison to the Blackberry Storm and the G1.

If At&t were to charge for the added service, I would not pay for it. If you need it that bad, jailbreak your iPhone and tether free of charge. A simple web search will give you step by step instructions on how to jailbreak your phone along with manually installing an iPhone app that will allow you to tether.
