How not to launch

How not to launch

So you have secured one of the coolest domains on the planet.  Heck, you can’t even believe it was available! So you snatch it up right away.  You have a great idea for a web product that might exist but isn’t being done correctly, and you are positive you can do it better. You also have a great platform to bring it all to life not to mention a pretty cool concept for a logo.   So you do it… and the people come… only, there is no about page, there is no intro text, in fact, there is nothing to put everything on the site in context.  So they leave and never come back.

This would be BlackPower.com

Now, I have spent a bit of time perusing the site and I THINK it’s a news site of some type?  I can’t be sure though.  The logo only says “for open minds only”.  That still doesn’t let me know what it is. However, the content leads me to believe that it must be a news site. I had to explore longer than I would have liked to figure that out and I still can’t be sure.  If it is a new site, I don’t know what perspective the news is supposed to be from.  Despite the cool URL and Logo, I still don’t have enough information to figure it out.  Theoretically, I guess I could take the time to go through and read a bunch of stories until I figured it out, but, why would I do that?  I’ll just go somewhere else.

It’s really not that the audience is stupid… it is just important to remember that when people browse the internet, a lot of times they are busy doing other things and don’t want to take the time to have to figure out your site when there are at least dozens of other sites offering something similar… if they can even figure out what it is you are offering.  Initial messaging, though it may seem silly, is important.  You can do it with a good logo, the right imagery on the front page or by having a simple text blurb and name/titling (which should be done for SEO anyway).   As best practice, especially with something new, there should also always be an about page of some type.  It’s just manners.  Plus, (again) it’s great for SEO purposes as well.

Anyway, BlackPower.com is too ambiguous of a title with too know exactly what the site is, and there is no big Beta sticker on it… so, for now, I am going to say it kind of sort of FAILED.  However, it is easily fixable.  It just needs to be positioned so that we know what it is.

I was on this site literally last week and it had Lorem Ipsum type text all over it. Though there was no actual content I was fairly impressed with their use and execution of Wordpress. Totally on the right track there, and ten million times ahead of say, TheRoot.com.

Some of the ads look to be skipping down the wrong column though, so I assumed they weren't exactly ready yet. I am sure their still working on some things. I'll keep an eye on it.
  • You know...I actually liked it! I love the recommendation feature, because lots of people don't comment and it gives the user a chance to have a say on the content without commenting and it allows the publisher to see what's working and what's not. I found the content fresh too. I liked the David Allen Grier story and a couple others.

As with any new site, they are most likely trying to find their way in the space and figuring out what works from them. I am sure they will tighten things over the next couple weeks. It's seems that this could be a soft launch since some of the features are not available yet.

I totally get what they are doing. I would describe it as a news, entertainment and commentary site (lifestyle website). As Liz said I will keep an eye on them.

We have to remember not everyone is a expert or seasoned online pro and might be learning things as they go (as I did) -- so I think they are off to a good start in a very long race.
  • @Liz Eek@ the Lorem Ipsum. I liked their use of wordpress and their theme a lot too. I will also be keeping an eye on it. I think it has a lot of potential, it's just not there yet.

@Dede, thanks for your input, it is always appreciated. I hope that they tighten stuff up.

For anyone else out there planning on launching a wordpress based site, there is a maintenance mode plugin out there:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/maintenance...

It lets you edit your site and use it etc when logged in as an admin and keeps it hidden from the public as you work out the tweeks. You never know who is going to access your site once it is live so you want to have the most impact when you launch.

I would have suggested a simpler template for a site working on building content. This current design is for sites with a lot of content, and it leaves little room for error. A simple about us page wouldn't hurt either.

One thing's for sure, with a name like BlackPower.com, they better bring it!! GL
  • I LOVE you guys. I always learn something new.

That maintenance mode with help as I transition from our blog to http://www.AroundHarlem.com
  • thanks for the maintenance mode plugin tip. Honestly. you don't dictate what your
"community" turns into. You have to be flexible...at least for "corporate" blogs.

My personal blog however is a benevolent dictatorship.

Thanks for the rollout tips. I'm definitely using them.
  • The about page has been added for anyone interested (http://www.blackpower.com/about/).

Still working on a few other features. Check out www.hotghettomess.com, I finished design and development on that a couple of weeks ago, also on WP.
  • @Johnathan

Thanks for the update! The about page is amazing. I love it!!

Wow! that site was hot. Its about time someone did "black" news with some edge. Im so tired of Ebony/Jet news or hip hop gossip. It seems that black news magazines are either generic, street or overly ideological. Im curious about the first post where you complained that we didnt know what perspective the news was coming from. Why would we need a perspective? We all bring our own perspectives and then agree or disagree. I think we should always be presented with a variety of perspectives. Left VS Right is getting very tired. i wish them well.
