Which MC has Online Swag?

by Erica Hartfield Which MC has Online Swag?

One of the hottest songs out, Swagger Like Us, features four of the hottest MCs in the game: T.I., Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and Kayne West. In today’s music industry, it is absolutely necessary to connect with your fans on all online destinations. Taking an analysis of these four men, I found they each have their own presence online. I have ranked these influential rappers based not only on their lyrics, but also the voice they have online.

#1 “Kanye West”: 24.1 million Google search results/ 660k+ blog mentions
Personal Website: 1,965 Incoming Links
Personal Blog
MySpace Page
Facebook Fan Page
Twitter Page
Last FM Page
YouTube Channel

#2 “Lil Wayne”: 25.6 million Google search results/ 420k+ blog mentions
Personal Website: 174 Incoming Links
MySpace Page
Last FM Page
YouTube Channel
Facebook Fan Page

#3 Jay-Z: 24.9 million Google search results/ 738k+ blog mentions
Personal Website = Roc-a-fella Records: 656 Incoming Links
MySpace Page
Last FM Page
Facebook Fan Page

#4 “T.I.”: 627 million Google search results/ 22.6+ million blog mentions
Personal Website = Ning Community: 238 Incoming Links
MySpace Page
Facebook Fan Page
Last FM Page
YouTube Channel

Ok, I only looked on a few sites and this is a brief overview of what I found. While Google may have more search results for Lil Wayne than Kanye West, Kanye has more than 1900 incoming links to his personal website and that is the reason I ranked him #1! Below is a chart I made with Google Trends that ranks the rappers by the number of search terms. This chart would be more accurate for T.I. since there were results that included Texas Instruments in his results. However, there is still the possibility of error due to incorrect spelling of the names:

As previously stated, Lil Wayne is the leader for search results while T.I. and Jay Z trail far behind. One thing I noticed in my quest was that Jay Z does not have a PERSONAL web site! For Jay Z to be such a leader in the urban community, he sure missed the boat on this one. He may need to take a lesson or two from his friend Diddy who came out with Swagger Like Puff not too long ago. Of course Diddy has his own web site and MySpace page, but he has revolutionized vlogs or “Diddy Blogs” as he calls them. Today’s culture is to be online, generate some content, and make your voice heard. If their fans are doing it, why aren’t the artists?

  • Very nice post!!!
  • Brilliant!! Great insight on rappers online presence.
  • Markus
Kanye might have the online swag, but TI had the hottest verse on that song! ;)
  • Funny that Kanye missed the boat on this one, Jay-Z's decline in popularity is understandable because of his hip-hop mogul busy lifestyle. But Kanye?! Where the heck are you and what are you up to??
