Newly launched Baltimore based Urban Communications (UC) parent company of OurSpace.com, an online social network for HBCU Students, and BlackPower.com, a daily online magazine with discussion of viewpoints currently shaping black culture, has added another web property to their stable. UC today announced the acquisition of N*ggaSpace.com, the social network for chill people, for an undisclosed amount. According to UC’s development team, N*ggaSpace.com will be reintroduced to users with better technology, content filter enhancements and privacy controls.
N*ggaspace.com, visited over 7,000,000 times in 2007, has declined in traffic over 90% according to compete statistics.
So why would UC acquire a site that has one foot in the dead pool? Well it could be a brand awareness play. According to Chanda Cole, VP of Marketing
“Out of the 20 million African Americans online, 15 percent use or are aware of N*ggaSpace.com,”
Looks like this deal may be more predicated on the potential traffic for UC’s other properties stand to gain from N*gga Space’s brand recognition.
While Urban Communications, attempts to gain traffic from N*gga Space’s brand, will the traffic gained worth the potential beating UC’s overall brand stands to take? Only time will tell, but UC’s President Kenny Clash, doesn’t seem fazed.
Clash states:
“Urban Communications will soon be the number one trafficked network within the online African American community. Not only do Urban Communication users set the trends, they constantly want to associate with others in the community with similar interests.”
Very big words from an obvious confident Clash. We will see if he can deliver.
