Cisco Systems has agreed to acquire software company Pure Networks for $120 million in cash as the networking giant expands its consumer product portfolio.
This is Cisco’s first acquisition of a venture-backed company since it announced in November that it would acquire Securent, a provider of policy management software, for $100 million in cash. Cisco, which has acquired more venture-backed companies than any other since 2000, Cisco bought nine such start-ups last year alone.
Pure Networks makes software that simplifies the process of setting up and managing a home network. Cisco sees this as an important technology as home networking moves into its next phase, where an increasing number of appliances will be plugged into a home network, said Charles Carmel, vice president of corporate development for Cisco.
