Comcast invests in P2P video-delivery startup

Seems Comcast has been busy lately, as reported a few days ago with the Plaxo deal. I noticed today that Seattle-based GridNetworks on Monday said that Comcast would make an unspecified investment in the company and collaborate on developing so-called peer-to-peer file-sharing techniques that are “friendly” to Internet service providers.

That’s a step in the right direction and a good move seeing that Comcast is under investigation for blocking peer to peer traffic, Comcast has said that it will stop targeting specific types of traffic by the end of the year. It has also reached out to file-sharing companies to try to develop mutually acceptable techniques.

Comcast CTO, Tony Werner, said Monday that Comcast is “working hard” with technology companies and the Internet Engineering Task Force to improve the efficiency of peer-to-peer file sharing.

I took a minute to go ahead and install the Grid Networks plug in, and I was quite impressed with the quality of the HD streams, and the cost should be very cost effective due to the use of P2P technology.
