I recently read an interesting article about web services, and how “The Future is Web Services, Not Web Sites”, and I must admit, it put a big smile on my face. As most of you know, several start-ups I have been involved with in last few years have pretty much “bet the house” on web services. Look at DAVE TV, and IP Network Systems, both of these starts-ups have web services platforms powering large media company portals. In the case of DAVE TV, its social broadcasting, for IP Network Systems, its media distribution, asset management, and rights management for record labels.
Fred Wilson, the famed VC, and avid blogger had this to say in a post he made recently on his blog, “So if you are building a new web service today, forget about being a destination. Maybe it will happen and maybe it won’t. Don’t fuss about that. Focus on making your service available everywhere. If you do that, you’ll build a much larger user base”.
So if you have built a great application, and are not getting much consumer traction, try to expose the functionality with some web services, and go after the B2B market.
