As I prepare my presentation for the Urban Network Annual Summit, I cant help but to ponder about all the critics and analyst who keep saying the music industry is dead, this that and the other. But yet there are clear indications (no not Apple) that money can, and will be made. Look at Harry Fox, the agency reportedly paid out more in revenue this year, which shows that music publishing is growing. Concert tickets sales have goon through the roof, And Bacardi disclosed a partnership with Groove Armada, the latest post-major tie-up.
Harmonix Music of MTV’s interactive division, the company’s Participatory “game” Rock Band has now sold six million individual tracks since the game launched. This is proof that you can make money, but company’s have to be willing to embrace change, and innovate. The “SIX TIMES PLATINUM” threshold comes after an initial game release in November of last year.

I think the important thing to note is that the music industry isn’t dying but the model has definitely changed and the majors have been slow to change and so there is significant disruption of the eco-system, but not a death. Distribution models have changed enabled by technological advances and artist are getting smarter about taking the middle men out of the mix. Frankly it has been time for a change and where it all falls out nobody knows.
