I agree with needing to be able to see past NY especially into Africa, they have a huge pool of tech companies run by blacks (Blacks in the UK and Africa tend to be more tech savvy then Americans as well).

AllHipHop is doing well traffic wise, they also have a strong brand and have been in the game for a while. As long as they stay innovative I don't think they will fall off. Site will always have other sites biting at their heels.

I think we as Black people have to stop being so New York focused. The south is where all Black owned companies really need to start focusing on. Then even beyond that Africa. AHH has a good site and descent content but as more and more companies come into the space they will have to compete dollar for dollar for that online urban eyeball.

Take a look at them on Compete.com vs. other sites and you'll see they are doing well but will that cont. on or will their traffic at some point flatten out as more and more sites and blogs come into the space taking eye balls away from them.

See Markus, I think events are a good extension for a brand. But as AHH learned, events are expensive so you have to go after major sponsors. I think events work better for local companies though. For instance radio stations. Beyond the tri-state area, how does a week-long event in NYC help to extend a brand in a time when everything is global because of the Web. So though I'm not pitching virtual events, though that would have been a nice tie in to the real event, offering others in other places a way to participate, I would suggest that a company that is national, or global consider hosting events in more than one location. At the least, on both coasts. But the company also has to think about how much the event ties into their overall business goals and company mission.

Great post Lynne. I have been debating the idea of the Allhiphop.com Week, the AHH concert, and the fashion show as a way of promoting the Allhiphop.com brand. My first thought was that it was a great way to get off line users online, but after thinking about it, I wonder how many of these people actually turn into readers (I bet it's not enough to realize the ROI). In fact these events may actually be counterproductive to their ultimate goals.

It seems to me it would make more sense to get the users while they're already online. AHH would be much more effective if they used their celebrity connections for exclusive content. Whether it's the world premier of a music video, an exclusive remix that you will only hear on AHH, exclusive footage of an artist in the studio, or even an exclusive interview from an artist (IE T.I's interview with StreetCred.com) great content would make more of an impact and be a lot cheaper to do than coordinating a concert. (Content is King!)

AHH may also need to consider hiring an experienced leader in the web technology space to serve as the company's CEO.
