One laptop per child is attempting to supply each school aged child in an underdeveloped country with an XO Laptop. Between November 12th and November 26th is you purchase and donate 1 laptop ($399) you will receive 1 laptop to give to a child in your life. What I find particularly interesting about this laptop is the way it includes social and sharing features, it basically has its own built in social network. Each child with one of these laptops will be connected with other children who own one of these XO Laptops and can browse the web together, chat, play games, and even edit music together. Sounds interesting huh? You can learn more about the interface and social aspects of the laptop on there website. You can also donate from their site as well.

Great starter laptop! The operating system is Linux,so it’s incredbly flexible and hackable. Most of the “Third world Countries”are already familiar with linux since it’s open source and free. The camara is actually ok. A little girl already used it to film a farm animal give birth. This right here is the real WEB 2.0 …

The US needs to purchase one for every seat in every public school!

Thanks for posting this. While there has been reasonable coverage of this venture in the mainstream media, I don’t get the sense that there is widespread participation in this program. This a tremendous opportunity to empower future generations, and children disenfranchised from the online community across the Diaspora and other countries who are not active participants in the flattening of the world by way of digital economics. If everyone on this blog pooled their funds together to purchase several of these laptops, we could make a very loud statement about the altruistic sensibility that I believe is a strong characteristic of the Black Digerati. I pledge $100, who will join me before 11/26 to pledge $299 more?

@ Mega: Great suggestion, check out the latest post to stay updated on where we are with the pledges.
@ Ken: I agree the US needs to purchase one if not for every child in America then for those children that are in lower income school districts where most don’t have computers at home. Doing something like this is a great way for the government to aide in closing what is left of the Digital Divide.
