Essence 30 Dates in 30 Days Airs!

Essence Webisode, Nicole's Page

You can check it out on Essence’s website. I am glad I finally got to watch it but disappointed overall. Coming from Essence which is such a huge brand in the African-American community I expected so much more. I kinda feel like they took the easy way out.

Review:
I expected and actual “minisite” to be separate from the Essence.com website but still have some sort of promotion on the main site for the webisode present. I think if there was a domain such as 30dates30days.com (Note: It is available) it would brand the webisode and possibly spin off and become a webisode series, very possible if done right I think users would be very interested in something like this. As far as the interface I really though each Bachelorette was going to have its own where I could navigate all things about that Bachelorette. It does that now kind of but is still very much disconnected, say I go to Nicole’s blog. Because it is hosted on Typepad and not on Essence’s website there is no navigation for Nicole’s “page”, I have to use the browsers back button just to get back to where I was or go back to Essence’s homepage. This is similar for Nicole’s photo gallery, once there I have to use the side navigation to go back to the Bachelorette landing page from there I have to click back on Nicole’s page. So I guess I just expected it to be more usable.

I also expected to actually be able to buy Nicole’s outfit (I really like the dress). Not sure why I thought that, oh yeah that’s because that’s what it says. Well you can’t, not interactively and online at least. Her outfit and designers are listed but they are not even linkable to their respective websites. Integrating e-commerce into this experience could have benefited the experience as a whole even simple linking to Leopard Print Shoes at Nine West. Not sure if those are the ones she wore but you get the point.

As for the video, I really liked everything about it except for the length. I though it was going to be longer then 5 minutes and 39 seconds, a little more like 30 minutes so we could all really get a better sense of the date other then what the participants said. I found it hard to form an educated opinion on my thoughts of the date in just 5 minutes. This could possibly make it hard for users to discuss and interact with each other on their website which I am sure is one of Essence’s goals.

As the internet becomes the medium of choice for many other forms of media such as Newspapers, Magazines, and Television will have to evolve and really understand the internet and what web users want. It can be a challenge because the internet is so dynamic (vastly different from the print medium) and users want so much more then just a static page these days.

30 Dates in 30 Days not up yet

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

When I was on the Essence.com 30 Dates in 30 Days website yesterday it said “Tune in tomorrow at 10 a.m. (EST) to watch video from her first date!” so I set a reminder in my iPhone. I was all ready to go but when I clicked on the link there was no video in sight. After surfing their site for about 10 mins. looking for the video (I thought maybe it was located somewhere else) I still couldn’t find it. Not sure what is going on here it still says “Tune in tomorrow at 10 a.m. (EST) to watch video from her first date!” so I guess maybe tune in tomorrow? If it is not up tomorrow I probably won’t be back, hey I tried.

AOL HQ to move to NYC

Monday, September 17th, 2007

AOL announced that they are moving their corporate headquarters to New York City. New headquarters will be located at 770 Broadway in New York City where they have leased office space. AOL’s NY based advertising and programming operation will also be based out of the same location. Operations in Dulles, VA, Mountain View, CA, and other locations will still continue in those locations.

AOL relocating its headquarters to NY is just one out of a series of recent changes. They are globalizing and launching country specific web portals around the world in an effort to increase their global audience, revamped programming and products, and putting a lot of effort into building the world’s most effective ad network Platform A.

It will be interesting to see if all of these changes will affect Black Voices at all. I don’t expect the move to NYC will since most of the staff is there now anyway but the revamping of products globalization may. We can probably expect to see more features rolled out related to BlackVoices in the future, an embeddable widget with BV entertainment news? Hmmm, not sure but if the company interest is in expanding advertising and audience that would be a good way to do so. Widgets could be embedded into member pages on social networks worldwide and include advertisements similar to what Mochila is currently doing except with AOL original content.

Obama Expands His Social Network

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Barack Obama's LinkedIn Profile

Sen. Barack Obama’s online campaign is relentless! In addition to his own website (which boosts Obama Mobile - ringtones and text message updates) and social network his MySpace page, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, and Facebook are in company with LinkedIn. However, don’t expect to be added to Obama’s network unless you actually know him. Don’t feel bad you can always join his LinkedIn Group “Obama for America on LinkedIn.” Nielsen recently reported that Obama leads the political race online with 717,000 unique visitors in July, more then all republican candidates as well as Hillary Clinton an John Edwards. Clinton follow Obama with 437,000 unique visitors to her website in July. Obama’s web strategy is clearly effective and an example of how all political campaigns will be run in the future.
